A good wig is an investment, and like anything you wear often, it needs looking after. Washing and styling at home will keep it going, but every so often it needs a proper reset. That's where a professional wig revamp comes in.
So how often should you book one? It mostly comes down to how often you wear your wig and how you care for it between appointments.
A rough guide to wig revamp timings
Every wig and every wearer is different, but as a general guide for human hair wigs:
- Worn every day: a revamp every 6 to 8 weeks
- Worn a few times a week: every 2 to 3 months
- Worn for special occasions: two or three times a year, or before a big event
If you use a lot of heat, styling products or adhesive, you may need a revamp sooner. The same goes if you live in a hard water area. Water high in calcium and magnesium can leave mineral deposits that build up over time[2], leaving hair feeling dull and coated.
Signs your wig is due a revamp
Don't just go by the calendar. Your wig will usually tell you when it needs attention. Look out for:
- Tangling or matting, especially at the nape
- Hair that feels dry, rough or frizzy even after washing
- A style that won't hold like it used to
- Product build-up, dullness or a lingering smell
- Lace that's lifting, discoloured or starting to tear
- A hairline that no longer looks natural
- More shedding than usual
Catching these early makes a real difference. A tired wig can usually be brought back to life with a revamp. Leave it too long and it may need more work to fix.
Wig revamp vs wig restoration
A wig revamp is a refresh: a deep clean, conditioning, detangling and restyling so your unit looks and feels like new again. Human hair on a wig doesn't get natural oils from a scalp the way growing hair does, so regular conditioning matters more than people expect[3].
Wig restoration goes further. It's for wigs that need repairs, such as damaged or worn-out lace, shedding, or a hairline that needs rebuilding. On a lace wig, each strand is hand-tied to a sheer lace base that sits over the scalp[1], so once that lace is torn or worn, the hairline stops looking natural. In many cases, lace replacement can give a wig you love a whole new lease of life, often for less than buying a new one.
